Gallery Research

Below are just a couple of images of existing galleries i have researched as inspiration, or 'cake' as one of my lecturers calls it, for my current Gallery design project. The images i have chosen to feature here are focused on a couple of galleries located not far from each other in New York. As my site location for my design is a very thin and long rectangular shape the repeating blocking or height of these gallieries, i found the most interesting.

New York Museum of Contemporary Art

Sperome Westwater Gallery, New York

Another gallery design i particularily liked is again based in new york. The sperone westwater gallery is situated not far from the museum of contemporary art but is unique in that the gallery feature a moving room.

Dale Chihuly; Beyond The Object

Between the 8th February 2014 and 21st June 2014, the halcyon gallery in London hosted an exhibit by American Artist Dale Chihuly. Beyond the Object; aimed to respond to the interior architecture of the building by changing the space with hand blown glass sculptures.

Unfortunately this exhibition was something i stumbled across on the internet rather than got chance to go and visit myslef, which was a shame because i can imagine the ambience/feeling/mood, things that arent experienced through viewing a photograph are especially important when experiencing work of art such as this.

"What I've always really been interested in is space. Even when I made a single Cylinder or Macchia, my interest was always in space. I was thinking not of the object itself, but how the object would look in a room."Dale Chihuly

Tracey Emin; The Last Great Adventure Is You

The White Cube Gallery in Bermondsey is currently host to the Tracey Emin exhibition; The Last Great Adventure is you. Made up of paintings, sculptures and neon creations, the exhibit "chronicles the contemplative nature of work by an artist who has consistently examined her life with excoriating candour." (White Cube, 2014)

I was keen to research work by Tracey Emin, not necessarily for the pieces but i was interested in looking at the way she displayed her pieces within the gallery space. As Tracey Emin's art works are usually extremly personal, i was interested to see how this link to the art influenced the arrangement and spatial context in which the art work is displayed.

Goldsmith Street, Nottingham

Goldsmith Street in Nottingam is to become the site of my second Design Project, the design of a gallery space.

A burnt out Indian Restaurant currently sits on the plot. These photos i took to form part of my site analysis.

Product Design - First Studio Project

Incorporating my wearable technology research my design concept for my first studio project took the shape of a biodegradeable solar bag. The bag has a detachable solar panel, in which the phone can be plugged into the back, allowing the panel to be drapped over fixtures for maximum charge potential whilst encorporating the 'green' expectations of Glastonbury Festival.

Solar Fibre

The idea behind Solar Fiber is a flexible photovoltaic fiber that converts sunlight energy into electrical energy.  We aim to develop this as a yarn that can be worked into all sorts of fabrics. This “smart material” will be able to be used in all sorts of applications where textiles are currently used, but with the added advantage of being able to produce an electrical current.”

Solar Fibre, 2014, have; “developed our latest prototype: the solar shawl. The fabric was woven by Van Den Acker textile manufacturers, and then the shawl was constructed and the electronics integrated. The amount of energy being generated is displayed in real-time on the shawl itself.“

Wearable Solar

 Pauline Van Dongen

Van Dongen, quoted by Ha 2014, had two main inspiratios;

“One of them is the fact that we highly depend on connectivity. We’re all addicted to our smartphones and we want them constantly powered, and the better our batteries get, the more we’ll use them. And at the same time, working as a werable tech designer, I know the difficulties when integrating these kind of bulky batteries that don’t allow for any comfort or wearability. So that’s why I thought, why not power your phone through your clothes? And eventually power other interactive qualities that our garments are becoming a platform for.”
